Unit 5 - Text
The Flautist of Hamelin
The people in the town of Hamelin are worried, because they have a mice infestation. The mice eat all the food and spread diseases among the children, so the townspeople walk to the house of the mayor asking for a solution. The mayor of Hamelin sends requests across the country for someone who can solve the mice problem. The next morning, a mysterious man arrives in Hamelin claiming he has the solution to their problem, but asks in exchange 10 000 dollars. The mayor of the town believes that the price is very expensive but agrees to the flautist demands. Then, the flautist plays an amazing tune on his flute and dances around the town. The mice appear from everywhere and follow him forming a line of hundreds. The flautist dances his way out of the city and walks into a low water river, followed by the mice, drowning them.
The people in Hamelin celebrate the achievement but the mayor refuses to pay the amount to the flautist. In revenge, that night, while the people are celebrating, the flautist plays another soft tune in his flute and the children of the townspeople left their beds to follow the flautist. The flautist leads them into the mountains outside of Hamelin for never to be seen again.
